The One Contest I Will Never Enter
My ideal contest contains as few steps as possible. Following, possibly liking, and tagging someone in the comments. That's it. Short and sweet. Easy as pie.
However, I've recently seen a trend that is making one of those steps way longer than it needs to be.
There are accounts popping up giving away great prizes IF you are willing to follow the 40+ accounts they are following.
For me, that's just not worth it. Sure going down the list and following everyone won't really take that much time, but when your odds are low to begin with, IT'S NOT WORTH IT.
You may be asking yourself, how are they giving away such great prizes? Think a $500 gift card to Amazon or designer bags or all expense paid trips to Bali. These things are expensive.
I believe that the 40+ accounts they are following all chip in some amount of money to be added to the list. A $500 Amazon gift card divided among 40 people is only $12.50 per person. When you think of how many followers they gain from these giveaways, $12.50 really isn't that much money to be spending to get real followers.
However, I think the account that actually hosts the giveaway is increasing that amount each person chips in and is likely keeping some profits for themselves. If you made all 40 people hand over $25 each instead of only $12.50, well then you've just made $500 for the giveaway and $500 for yourself to keep. It's pretty smart and I'll give them credit for that.
Now if you're thinking of joining in on one of these giveaways to increase your follower count, just realize that the people who are following you have likely never even looked at your page. You're simply just a name on a list to them. Chances are that a lot of them will unfollow you after the giveaway. It's not worth it.
If you're looking to grow your follower count through a giveaway, I suggest partnering with a company or another similar account to get followers who are actually interested in you. I'll admit that sometimes I unfollow accounts after giveaways if I don't care about their content.
So long story short, if you see one of these contests, entering it is not worth your time. And if you get asked to be a partner in one of these contests, it's not worth your money for the followers.
